Rampersad Helms ‘The Red Shoes’ At RSC
Following in Tim Carroll’s footsteps, Kimberley Rampersad, the Associate Artistic Director of the Shaw Festival is directing and choreographing The Red Shoes at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon.
This Red Shoes is a new version of Hans Christian Andersen’s “dark fairy tale” by Irish playwright Nancy Harris, who brings a dark Irish wit to the project.
To quote from the RSC’s PR, “The Red Shoes is both a magical story and cautionary tale of pride, vanity and how we all deserve to dance how we wish to dance.”
I have noted that at the Shaw Festival Rampersad is most often choreographing for “actors who move well.” In England, she has a cadre of trained dancers at her disposal.
The Red Shoes has just opened for previews and will run through January 19, 2025, on the RSC’s Swan Stage.
My schedule in England only allowed me to take in the first preview, so any attempt at a review would be premature. Suffice it to say, the auguries are auspicious.
