Liars At A Funeral Is Back
I saw Liars At A Funeral in 2023 at the Blyth Festival and raved about it.
This season it is being revived by Drayton Entertainment at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse. As is so often the case with plays and productions I love I hesitate to see other productions. I’d rather cherish the memory.
My resolve was weakened by the fact that the cast included personal favourites Jan Alexandra Smith (Dinner With The Duchess) and actor/playwright Mark Crawford (Bed and Breakfast). In short, I succumbed and I’m glad I did. Not only are Smith and Crawford exemplary, the Drayton production also features Alison Beckwith, new to me, who is absolutely delightful.
Liars At A Funeral remains one of the cleverest farces that has emerged in recent years. Not only is it hysterically funny, you’ll find yourself in awe of the chutzpah playwright Sophia Fabiilli exhibits in her wickedly clever structure.
Another draw was director Dennis Garnhum. I had admired his work at the Grand Theatre in London, ON, where he was artistic director. Then something of a midlife crisis prompted him to walk the Camino de Santiago and it looked for a while like he was going to leave the wicked stage behind. Thankfully he didn’t and he has directed this outing of Liars at the breathtaking clip the material demands.
Liars At A Funeral continues at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse through July 12, 2025. For more information or to purchase tickets visit the Drayton Entertainment website.
